ATLAS Space Operation is unleashing the power of a federated network powered by Freedom™.

ATLAS CTO & Co-Founder, Brad Bode, sits down with the World Teleport Association (WTA) for their Executive Dialogue Series to discuss the ATLAS Federated Network and what this means for its clients and the industry.

A federated network is simply a network of networks. Through a single API, satellite operators can access ATLAS-owned and operated ground stations and any integrated third-party partner – such as AWS Ground Station and Viasat Real-Time Earth.

Unlike other ground station providers, ATLAS provides a seamless experience for accessing space. Through a uniform API and data delivery system, your data is processed consistently regardless of the provider, freeing up your team to focus on the mission at hand without concerns about hardware or software compatibility.

Traverse City, Michigan — March 8, 2023 — ATLAS Space Operations, the leading Ground Software as a Service™ (GSaaS) provider, today announced a new partnership with Viasat Real-Time Earth (RTE). The partnership between ATLAS and Viasat RTE makes 10 new antennas within the Viasat network immediately available to ATLAS clients, with two additional antennas available by the end of the year.

For ATLAS, the partnership with Viasat represents another significant expansion of its federated global ground network of 44 sites after adding 11 ground sites belonging to AWS last month. The federated network is operated by ATLAS’ proprietary communications and management software, Freedom™. Through Freedom, ATLAS clients easily onboard their missions and manage data flow and pass execution from a single point of entry while the software abstracts away all hardware differences. The result is a network of networks that enables users to access many ground networks through a single provider—ATLAS.

“Through our partnership with Viasat we are expanding the global footprint of our federated network and demonstrating the usefulness of software in the SATCOM marketplace,” said Brad Bode, Co-Founder and Chief Technology Officer of ATLAS Space Operations. Bode continued, “Developments like this are less about infrastructure implications, and more about the utility of software to enhance hardware capabilities. Through Freedom we are able to extract far greater value from existing hardware without incurring additional costs. Using software to create one common ground solution allows us to offer extensive capabilities atop data delivery, such as automated insight into pass performance, Copilot to enable rapid onboarding, a superb user interface, and our single TT&C entry point in the cloud, no matter the site. Most importantly for our clients, Freedom is flexible and accessible through our unified interface, which means as our federated network grows, new antennas are immediately available to clients without any software changes on their end.”

“We view our partnership with ATLAS Space Operations as a true win-win for our companies and the industry,” said John Williams, Vice President of Viasat RTE. “We are already seeing enormous interest in this joint approach. Government customers flying a variety of assets appreciate the diversity of antennas available to them through a single interface, while commercial customers see the value in more antennas in different locations to significantly reduce the latency between data collection and data delivery.”

Beyond network capacity growth, the new partnership between ATLAS and Viasat opens new horizons for ATLAS clients through larger antennas. Most antennas in the Viasat RTE network are 7.3 meters and include Ka-band reception for remote sensing missions—ideal for high throughput connectivity and better signal strength to support further missions. With these larger apertures, clients can now contact satellites in MEO and GEO orbits, opening expanded orbits for satellite operators.

Voting is open online from Feb. 22 to 12 p.m. on March 14 and can be accessed at satellitetoday.com/vote. Here are the 2022 Technology of the Year nominees.

This year, ATLAS is proud to be one of six technologies nominated by Via Satellite as the 2022 Satellite Technology of the Year, for our “Freedom” Ground-Software-as-a-Service.

ATLAS Space Operations “Freedom” Ground-Software-as-a-Service
ATLAS Space Operations’ proprietary Ground-Software-as-a-Service (GSaaS) platform, Freedom, automates communications processes, pre-plans satellite passes and eliminates the need for satellite owners to act as ground station operators. It is entirely cloud-based, utilizing Amazon Web Services, and data-driven. Freedom leverages more than 1 billion data points, organized and presented in an upgraded user interface allowing customers to determine if a pass is a success or a failure, and gain visibility across the entire network. These features allow government agency end-users to easily scale and adapt their operations.

By developing Freedom, ATLAS aimed to solve a common challenge in the satellite ground systems world – overcoming the rigidity and complexity of legacy systems. In the days before cloud-based GSaaS, most ground technologies did not allow data sharing unless customers invested in building their own complex software solutions to accommodate this need. The Freedom software, coupled with the Atlas team of software experts, is compatible with any ground site hardware.

Via Satellite is recognizing Atlas for its innovation in the cloud and for sustained success that has contributed directly to the rapid and widening adoption of GSaaS. The Freedom platform received a major government endorsement in 2017 when Atlas signed a multi-million dollar contract with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) to support the agency’s National Environmental Satellite Data and Information Service (NESDIS) missions throughout a multi-year term. Since then, Atlas reports it has completed 52,000 passes for NOAA with more than 98 percent availability, with low latency of under 26 seconds – a feat that stands out in today’s competitive ground systems market.

The Rwanda Space Agency (RSA) and ATLAS Space Operations Inc., a leading American company in satellite communication ground infrastructure, have announced a strategic partnership to utilise a teleport in Rwanda. The teleport will feature a 9.3-meter antenna in different frequency bands capable of servicing spacecraft on lunar missions.

The agreement was signed on 21 February 2023 between Mike Carey, Co-Founder and Chief Operating Officer of ATLAS, and Col Francis Ngabo, CEO of RSA, to allow ATLAS to extend its network of global ground stations in Sub-Saharan Africa with the capability to support lunar missions.

According to the agreement’s details released by RSA, the Agency is building a teleport capable of hosting multiple ground stations to service satellites in different orbits. In addition, the teleport has state-of-the-art infrastructure and facilities capable of providing critical communication for spacecraft Telemetry, Tracking and Command (TT&C).

Col Francis Ngabo explained at the ceremony that the Agency is delighted to partner with ATLAS Space Operation Ltd to advance their teleport operations. “The partnership results from RSA’s strategy to invest in the midstream and downstream segments of the space sector, enabling Rwanda to become the go-to destination for any global space entity wishing to use satellite ground infrastructure in sub-Saharan Africa. In addition, we believe our partnership with ATLAS will bring value to Rwanda’s teleport and space programme in general,” Col Francis added.

Furthermore, Col Francis added that the 9.3-meter antenna could service many satellites at different time slots, and therefore RSA welcomes other satellite operators to consider Rwanda for their need in TT&C infrastructure. “The operationalisation of the teleport and satellite ground station will not only attract investors in the space sector but also provide easy access to satellite data for developing various applications that can contribute to the socio-economic development of Rwanda,” he concluded.

Mike Carey also noted that his organisation would employ its revolutionary approach to space communications – Ground Software as a Service, built around their Freedom Platform, to manage the Rwandan satellite ground station and other critical radio frequencies to facilitate satellite management and space missions.

“We are thrilled to partner with RSA to extend our operation in Sub-Saharan Africa. The combination of our Freedom software and federated global antenna network will provide opportunities for Rwanda to benefit from our large client base that wishes to use ground stations in sub-Saharan Africa. In addition, ATLAS intends to use the Rwandan ground station to command current and prospective client space missions, and this is a great example of how strategic partnerships can make space accessible for all,” Mike concluded.

The teleport in Rwanda comes at a time when the space industry is going through rapid development, with projected growth from USD 400 billion of revenue in 2022 to USD 1 Trillion in 2040. Similarly, the industry is also experiencing significant growth and interest in the outer space exploration segment, with missions like the Artemis 1 opening the way for a long journey back to the Moon.

Rwanda was the first country in Africa, together with Nigeria, to sign the Artemis Accords. To this end, with the global growth of the space industry and the increasing interest in outer space exploration, ground stations will play an essential role in maintaining communication between spacecraft or satellites in orbit with earth.

Traverse City, Michigan — January 31, 2023ATLAS Space Operations, a leading Ground Software as a Service™ (GSaaS) provider, today announced that it is the first provider to join the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Solution Provider Program (SPP) to resell AWS Ground Station, a fully managed ground station infrastructure which lets customers control satellite communications, process data, and scale their operations. The SPP is an official AWS program allowing specific AWS Partners to resell AWS services to end customers as part of their unique offerings. The SPP will expand ATLAS’ global federated network, a network of networks that work together seamlessly through Freedom™, ATLAS’ proprietary software that integrates its global ground network with partnered ground antenna sites. ATLAS clients will now have access to 11 additional ground sites, giving customers low-latency and low-cost access to AWS services so that they can quickly store and process their data. The Freedom software abstracts complexity through features such as flex scheduling, streaming metrics, pass insights, status updates, and one endpoint for all TT&C. This facilitates automation and integration into existing architectures.

AWS Ground Station lets space operators downlink and process their own satellite data without having to worry about building or managing ground station infrastructure. AWS Ground Station provides a global network of ground stations in close proximity to the global network of AWS infrastructure regions.

The work between ATLAS and AWS demonstrates ATLAS’ ability to combine and expand ground networks under a consistent Software as a Service offering. This software forward approach means ATLAS provides a fully managed service where operators have access to 29 ground stations around the world, including the global AWS Ground Station network, which has locations in North America (Hawaii, Ohio, and Oregon), Middle East (Bahrain), Europe (Ireland and Stockholm), Asia Pacific (Seoul, Singapore, and Sydney), Africa (Cape Town), and South America (Punta Arenas).  For clients not looking to invest in architecting their AWS Ground Station solution, ATLAS will fully manage all aspects of integration, from cloud formation to data delivery. This allows Satellite Operators to leverage ATLAS’ experience to get to market faster, with lower complexity.

“This work with AWS is a validation of the federated network model, and an immediate boost to ATLAS clients who can now access 11 new ground stations with zero software changes” said Brad Bode, ATLAS Chief Technology Officer and Co-Founder. Bode continued, “We’re excited about our relationship because it offers an integration-friendly gateway to expanded space communication services for our clients. The aggregation of multiple networks under one SaaS offers lower latency, pricing flexibility, surge support, and increases operator options, through a common interface.”

THE WHITE HOUSE STATEMENT – On December 13, 2022, the U.S.-Africa Leaders Summit featured the first-ever U.S.-Africa Space Forum. The Forum reaffirmed the United States’ commitment to collaborating with African partners on the peaceful use and exploration of outer space to meet shared priorities for here on Earth. The Forum highlighted the U.S.-Africa space partnership and cooperation to address 21st century challenges and opportunities, including responding to the climate, biodiversity, and global food crises; promoting responsible behavior in outer space; and reinforcing U.S.-African scientific and commercial space cooperation. Participants in the Forum committed to deepening the U.S.-Africa space partnership across all sectors.

The Forum celebrated the signing of the Artemis Accords by Nigeria and Rwanda, making them the first African signatories. The Artemis Accords are a set of principles to guide the next phase in space exploration, reinforcing and providing for important operational implementation of key obligations in the 1967 Outer Space Treaty. The Accords affirm the importance of implementing best practices and norms of responsible behavior as well as compliance with the Registration Convention and the Rescue and Return Agreement.

Professor Isa Ali Ibrahim, Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, signed the Artemis Accords on behalf of Nigeria, while Francis Ngabo, CEO of Rwanda Space Agency, signed the Accords on behalf of Rwanda. They were joined on the U.S. side by Assistant Secretary of State Monica Medina, Administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), Bill Nelson, and Executive Secretary of the National Space Council, Chirag Parikh. With their signatures, 23 nations have signed the Artemis Accords.

The Forum also discussed the role of the private sector in supporting U.S.-Africa space partnership. A number of U.S. companies have recently announced new investments in the U.S.-Africa partnership, including:

  • The Rwanda Space Agency and ATLAS Space Operations have partnered to bring a teleport and large satellite antenna to the global space community.
  • Planet Labs PBC is investing across Africa with a range of stakeholders to deliver daily satellite imagery and geospatial solutions that help meet sustainability, economic, and resource management priorities, including supporting decision making on drought risk protection, forest management, and renewable energy. Kenyan company ZEP-RE just announced that it will use Planet’s satellite imagery as it works with the World Bank on drought risk protection in the Horn of Africa.
  • In furtherance of Nigeria’s goal of providing all of its citizens broadband access by 2025, Nigeria announced that SpaceX’s high-speed, low latency broadband service Starlink is now available in the country, making Nigeria the first country in Africa where Starlink is available.
  • Zipline is drawing upon space data to expand its aerial logistics services to more government sectors in Rwanda, including the health, agriculture, finance, e-commerce and tourism divisions, and will conduct nearly two million instant deliveries across Rwanda by 2029.

Traverse City, Michigan — November 9, 2022 — ATLAS Space Operations, the leading Ground Software as a Service™ (GSaaS) provider, today announced the award of a Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract to develop a data analytics platform for the United States Space Force. The program will see ATLAS integrate communications infrastructure and multi-domain command and control systems to deliver enhanced insights regarding space communications through network data analytics.

ATLAS is well-positioned to execute the SBIR because it already leverages metric sharing on Freedom™ Software as a Service, the company’s preeminent space data transfer tool. Using metrics from pass success and equipment performance that are available to ATLAS’ clients, Space Force will gain valuable insight into the performance of ground site hardware, satellites, space communications, and even federated networks. ATLAS’ SBIR development places a strong emphasis on space-based software interoperability to identify opportunities and ensure a resilient on-orbit environment.

“The next generation of hybrid networks will be made more resilient through improved insight of system performance” said Ed McCarty, ATLAS VP of Client Solutions. McCarty continued, “Resilience is not achieved by simply adding hardware. Greater insight into system performance is crucial in identifying points of friction so users can anticipate problems and address them before they occur. The data analytics SBIR will advance network resiliency through predictive analysis and machine learning, and it is only possible through software — this is one way we’re redefining Ground Software as a Service.”

ATLAS recently shared its modern approach to ground systems, which includes a shift from Ground Station as a Service to Ground Software as a Service. The space communications industry long viewed GSaaS as a hardware-centric offering, but ATLAS recognizes the leading role that software plays for clients of all mission types. By transitioning to Ground Software as a Service, ATLAS functions as a software-forward company that provides services beyond simple antenna access. The Data Analytics SBIR is a further step towards capabilities every satellite operator truly needs.
